Councilman Robert Shankle was elected to the Lufkin City Council as Councilmember of Ward 2 on May 9, 2009. A lifelong resident of Lufkin, Texas, he graduated from Lufkin High School in the Class of 1985 and is also a Leadership Lufkin Graduate of 2012.
A Desert Storm disabled veteran, Councilman Shankle proudly served in the United States Army, National Guard, and U.S. Army Reserve for a total of 14 years. Passionate about community empowerment, he founded The Lufkin Pro Day Group and the Clergy and Police Alliance (CAPA) to foster local engagement and unity. Additionally, he helped establish the Citizens Fire Academy, which educates citizens about fire safety and firefighting operations. Councilman Shankle stands out as the only City Council member in Lufkin who hosts regular town hall meetings, creating a direct line of communication with his constituents.
Beyond his formal roles, Councilman Shankle is deeply committed to service and is heavily involved with local non-profits and community organizations. His efforts extend to supporting local churches, Impact Lufkin, the Angelina County Senior Citizens Center, and Lufkin Schools, Crime Stopper Advisory Board among others. Councilman Shankle is a member of the Texas Association of Black City Council Members and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, Brazos Transit Board of Directors, Member of DECTOG Executive Board of Directors and he is an active member of The Church by Christ Jesus. His guiding principle is captured in his favorite quote: “To whom much is given, much is required.”
Councilman Robert Shankle is a dedicated advocate for the Lufkin community, actively supporting various local initiatives and non-profits. His involvement spans across many impactful organizations, including local churches, Impact Lufkin, Angelina County Senior Citizens Center, and Lufkin Schools. Councilman Shankle has also founded influential committees, such as The Lufkin Pro Day Group, The Neighborhood Leadership Council of North Lufkin, and the Clergy and Police Alliance (CAPA), all designed to strengthen community connections and provide resources to residents. His commitment to service is further reflected through his work with veterans and his membership in the Texas Association of Black City Council Members and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.
